“Antique” - Texas Is The Reason

Texas Is The Reason was a ’90s post-hardcore band based in New York City. Though the band was only active for three years, they made a lasting impact on emo as a genre, proving that it could be both sonically powerful and lyrically thoughtful. Texas Is The Reason released the acclaimed album Do You Know Who You Are? on Revelation Records in 1996, and disbanded the following year at the peak of their attention from both MTV and major record labels. “Antique” is the third and final track from their 1995 self-titled debut EP.

Don Caballero is a math/post-rock band originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Despite numerous member changes over the years, Don Cab was active from 1991 to 2000 and took a hiatus until they regrouped in 2003. The band has garnered considerable acclaim over the years as their all-instrumental compositions reflect a grit complexity rivaled by few but their predecessors Slint. “New Laws” comes from their 1993 debut, Steve Albini-produced album For Respect.

Braid was a band from Urbana, Illinois that formed in 1993. Led my frontman Bob Nanna, Braid helped to establish emo rock as a national underground community in the late 1990s. Nanna later went on to front Hey Mercedes in the early 2000s, and remains active as a performer in the Midwest. ”First Day Back” comes from the Braid’s acclaimed 1998 release Frame & Canvas.

“Nailed To The Blank Spot” - Chavez

Chavez is an alternative rock band from New York that formed in 1993. Frontman and songwriter Matt Sweeney’s ability to blend gritty math/post-rock guitar work with melodic 90s rock choruses took the band to the national club scene. Matador Records released the band’s two albums Gone Glimmering and Ride The Fader in 1995 and 1996 to much acclaim. When Chavez began a hiatus in 1999, Sweeney joined Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins and Dave Pajo of Slint to form Zwan. Chavez has since begun playing again, most recently at Matador’s 21st Anniversary show in October 2010. “Nailed To The Blank Spot” is the opening track off Gone Glimmering.

Slint was an alternative rock band from Louisville, Kentucky formed in 1986. In 1991 the group released the critically-acclaimed and highly-influential Spiderland, a record widely considered to have pioneered the post-rock genre. The album showcases an unprecedented ability to use dynamic alterations and odd meters to create musical mood shifts through tension and release. Slint broke up shortly after the album’s release and have since reunited only in 2005 and 2007 for limited live performances. “Nosferatu Man” is the second track off Spiderland.

Fronted by lyricist/vocalist/guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach, Jawbreaker is considered one of the most influential bands of the ’90s emo movement, particularly their albums 24 Hour Revenge Therapy and the Jerry Finn-produced Dear You. After Jawbreaker’s dissolution, Schwarzenbach went on to form Jets to Brazil, a band that would further solidify his standing as one of the most important songwriters in the genre. ”Million” is the seventh track from Dear You.

American Football was an emo/indie rock band from Urbana, Illinois that formed in 1997. “Never Meant” is the opening track to their first and only full-length release, American Football. While the group disbanded in 2000, guitarist/vocalist/lyricist Mike Kinsella went on to play in the influential Chicago-based band Cap’n Jazz, and continues to write and perform independently as Owen. An early gem in Kinsella’s extensive catalog, “Never Meant” showcases the melodic, intricate songwriting that he has come to represent.
